Brendan Zani
Standing Committee Member
Brendan has been involved in the International Baccalaureate since 2008, and is passionate about fostering the growth of the IB in Western Australia. As a Diploma Coordinator, Brendan is at the coalface of issues of university admission, student wellbeing, IBO moderation and examination marking, fostering student participation in the Diploma, and recruitment and retention of teachers. Working in the Western Australian context, he is committed to contexts where the IB is not well-established, and has a keen interest in fostering relationships with universities and state educational authorities.
He continues to be excited by the transformative experience the IB provides, a journey he can now see in his own son, who is undertaking the PYP. He is known to regularly bore the other parents in his children鈥檚 classes with the benefits of an IB education. Brendan鈥檚 Masters thesis, exploring cultures of critical thinking, was stimulated by the distinctive difference he saw an IB education bringing students.
In between terms, Brendan is likely to be found working on French pastries or deep in some other recipe in the kitchen, or quietly chipping away at what he hopes will be a future Miles Franklin award winning novel. He is proud father of two future IB Diploma graduates, and husband to Perth鈥檚 unofficial IB ambassador. He continues to cling to his identity as a resident of the 鈥榤ost isolated capital city in the world鈥 while explaining to anyone from the rest of the country that Perth鈥檚 weather is different because 鈥榠t鈥檚 a dry heat鈥.
Rebecca Butterworth
Standing Committee Member, IB 91探花 91探花
Rebecca Butterworth joined HVGS in January 2022 after 19 years overseas working in international schools in leadership roles. Rebecca has worked in Singapore, Switzerland and China in International Baccalaureate World schools and has a long history as a teacher and administrator working with the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma. Rebecca is an English and History teacher by training, has spent several years teaching IB Diploma Theory of Knowledge course and holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and a Masters of Education.
Rebecca is committed to ensuring education goes beyond preparing students for university and final examinations, knowing that schools need to focus on the emotional health of young people and their capacity to be agile and flexible in an increasingly complex world. Rebecca鈥檚 passion is challenging young people to become autonomous, self-directed, compassionate, and well-balanced individuals who utilise their talents to have a positive impact on others. Mental health and wellbeing, and developing a strong culture of agency for staff and students, has been a central focus of Rebecca鈥檚 work as a Principal in Australia and overseas.
